Two-unit barn conversion with the addition of a two-unit attached new build in Galmpton, near Hope Cove

The first issue we came across was a live spring running under the build. We had to install ring beam chambers and a new soakaway to control the water levels. To make sure we had no issues with dampness the build was designed to incorporate a complete waterproofing system of the shell.

We used stone cladding on a timber frame to tie in with the existing barn. Since the client wanted to make sure the build felt traditional on the inside, too, we incorporated bespoke oak staircases, windows, doors, and frames together with slate floors and woodburners.

With the old barn we needed to reduce the ground floor level to increase head height, which in turn required underpinning of the perimeter walls. We tried to keep as many features as possible, which included the original roof A-frames and purlins, and we uncovered and repointed an internal stone wall to retain as a feature to the owners’ delight.
